What is a Clinical Psychologist?
A Clinical Psychologist has completed a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. This doctorate includes a range of clinical placements with diverse populations, and involves completion of a thesis on a clinically relevant topic. Clinical Psychologist is a protected title; to practise, it is a legal requirement to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and this registration will only be approved if you have evidence of your doctoral-level qualification. Clinical Psychologists are qualified to conduct psychological assessments, provide psychological therapy, engage in research, and offer training, consultation and supervision to other professionals and organisations. In contrast, a psychiatrist is medically trained and able to prescribe medication. Counsellor, psychologist and therapist are not protected titles.
